The little bit of greenish on the tip in the last picture would cause me to say shoot.  Does it matter?  Plant it roughly horizontally and it will find its way either way.

Country oriented nerd with primary interests in alternate energy in particular solar. Dabble in gardening, trees, cob, soil building and a host of others.

Pretty sure shoots usually emerge from nuts first because the rest of the seed still has nourishment to keep it going before it needs to access the soil.

from what i’ve seen (some hundreds of walnuts planted), it’s root first, then the shoot separates from that. either way, planting it out horizontally is a great way to simplify planting.

I always am a worry wort when I have seeds just starting to establish but they seem to get hearty quickly.

This is my 2nd attempt at growing black walnuts in the tropics.

This time around, I'm trying out California black walnuts (Juglans californica). I'm planning to raise them indoors (8in of soil in 12in polybags) and plant them before they get rootbound. When will that be, I have no idea.
