I shop cheaply. Vidalia onions are a splurge item. Yes folks, I'm THAT cheap. I finished the latest splurged bag  of vidalias a couple weeks ago. I made roast veggies last night and wished I hadn't put the special onions in... a soup. Any old onion does good in a soup! Ah well.

It FINALLY occurs to me that I can plant a couple of those onions to produce seed! Duh!

However, I once read that what makes vidalia onions be so wonderful is the soil that they are grown in.  Is this fact, or fiction?

Also, I have not yet successfully grown onions from seed. Sigh. What are YOUR tips to do so?

I have always heard it’s the soil.   I did stop at a  grocery store in Vidalia, Georgia once. The only sweet onions they had were from Peru.

Dang! I guess it's just too expensive to eat them there.

A friend from a coastal region spent a couple summers on a commercial fishing boat. He said they never ate fish, cause it was "cheaper" to sell it and buy a different meat.

What is your day length and growing season?
AI Overview

A typical onion variety and day length chart would categorize onions as "short-day" (bulbing with 10-12 hours of daylight), "intermediate-day" (bulbing with 12-14 hours of daylight), and "long-day" (bulbing with 14 or more hours of daylight), with specific varieties listed under each category depending on their light requirements for bulb formation; for example, "Vidalia" is a short-day onion, "Yellow Globe" is a long-day onion, and "White Bermuda" could be considered intermediate-day.
Jony's seed chart.
So it is more than just variety and soil type.

Hans, Johnny's chart tells me I'm in the short day category.
