I've found three outstanding uses for that white death in a can better known as vegetable shortening!
1)  to season a freshly sanded cast iron pan.
2)  apply a heavy coat to the paper label on a glass jar you want to save for reuse, it may take 12 to 24 hours for it to work, but it will soften the glue, just be very careful when washing said jar as it will sure be slippery.
3) perhaps my all time best use in all the world, add a heavy coat to your bird feeder poles and sit back and watch Mr Squirrel try to overcome this new mystery.

Peace

Jane, a heavy dose of cayenne mixed in with the bird seed will send Mr. Squirrel running, almost as much fun as the lubed pole thingy !

I was inspired by this to make a more humane mousetrap.

I took a large glass bowl with steep-ish sides, and I oiled the sides and placed sunflower seeds at the bottom. I then put a plate over the top, slightly cracked so that a mouse could get in. I set the whole contraption against a post. I watched the mouse come over and sniff around, looking for the best way to get in. Then the little mouse squeezed their way in… and could not get back out. I closed the plate over the top and took them some distance away.

Really I was probably better of doing nothing because they are only a menace due to my leaving sunflower seeds in places they could chew to. Or I could try drawing them away by putting seeds a short distance from the house.
