Finex Cast Iron Skillet on Kickstarter - Ends 11/17/2013

Since I know how much Paul enjoys real cast iron skillets, and keeping everything as local as possible, this person on KickStarter shares some of the same passions.

This Kickstarter project is gearing up to produce 12" skillets produced as local as possible in Portland, OR. The skillet comes with a redesigned outer edge, a stainless steel "spring" handle (to keep it cool), and a machined cooking surface so it's super, ultra flat and smooth, perfect for cooking bacon and eggs without all toxic gook.

I JUST saw this KS campaign on Wired.

As of today (November 14th) there are 3 days left on the campaign.

It looks like he has sold out of both his production runs- Hopefully he runs the numbers and figures out a fair price for the next run before his campaign closes. I'd love to get my hands on one of these!

It's interesting to see some innovations in this space. Not that spiral handles are anything new, but if he can make it work and have a real product after this campaign, my hat's off to him.

Looks like an improvement on a classic design.
However, one of his improvements keeps me from wanting one: the shape.

Where would one find any lid that could be used with this pan?
Perhaps, later on he will see this need, and begin producing lids as well.

Farther down in the kickstarter he mentions plans for a lid.

Is a lid being planned?

Yes! A Finex skillet lid is being planned and we announce it sometime after the first of the year.

We are making absolutely SURE that we do a great job of supporting our backers on this skillet before we take on more projects!

However... we are excited about the lid as the Finex 8-sided design allows the lid to out-baste our competition with it’s almost air tight fit and it doesn’t have any air gaps where traditional pour spouts leak steam.

Not sure why as don't need another cast iron skillet, but just backed this project 10 minutes ago. Picked up a 12" classic one, with the smooth machined bottom, while in Oregon month or so ago. Went to a small town, that had a little "thrift store mall" type thing and it was sitting there calling my name..

Haven't had chance to use it yet but will soon, at least once before get the Finex.

It's great to see that there are lots of people looking for a nontoxic cooking pan. Almost $200 for a 12" skillet is impressive, but I know it will last a lifetime--the vintage cast iron skillets I've found have lasted more than one!

Maybe this will convince someone with a bigger shop that machined cast iron has a market. . .
