The first pic in the above link is the original "Hobbit House" by Simon Dale. It seems that they have moved on from that house but the other houses they are building now are similar and yes they are very cool! I would love to find someone to build a house like this with!

I live in Missouri. It's in the middle of the US. I've lived here most of my life and considered moving to Idaho because it's rated a good and safe place to live but I don't know a soul there. My sister lives in MO also and she is all that I have left of family.
There is an eco community in the North East part of MO that I put in an application for but I haven't heard back from them yet. It's called Dancing Rabbit. I can learn about building houses there.
Are there many communities like the Lammas one? I signed up for info on that project too. There are places all over where you can go to visit and volunteer. It seems like that would be quite an adventure!

Small earth based structures are how i plan on living. Playing with cob for the first time was a fantastic experience.
I'm trying to set up 2 rmh workshops in the next two months, one in K.C. and one in NE.

I also have info on Dancing Rabbit and visited it with a friend. I would be happy to share my thoughts on it with you but would have to be P.M. or email or phone due to forum rules.
I recommend listening to Paul's Podcasts on community before making a commitment one.

Curious what part of MO you live in, I've traveled the state extensively and love the ozark regions. Fond memories of great-grandma in Noel, MO, and friends outside Lebanon.

I live West of St. Louis, near St. Charles, MO. The Ozarks are great and the best place to live so far as safety etc. as recommended by Joel Skousen in his "Strategic Relocation" book. My sister and her boyfriend live near St. James, MO and I plan on heading there if things get bad before I can get another place of my own set up first.

Finally a letter got through, so I will try for a little more info. I have been wanting to do the homestead thing for a long time, but I think I got it backwards, starting all by myself, though the first couple times I did sort of have partners, one of them I was married to, but the mistake was that they did not have similar dreams and I found myself being the only one doing the work and the ex, especially, working against me. Looking back I do not wonder that it did not progress well. Now I hope to have like minded people on board from the beginning.
One key thing is knowledge that chasing that green paper is the source of a lot of our problems, and I hope that those we are involved with feel that as deeply as I do. The paradox is that we will have to manage money efficiently in order to succeed at creating a space where it will not be so important in our lives. what do you think of that?
I have a few other projects in mind, things that I will need shops and barns and more houses for as well and I really like the idea of the hobbit house format. We could do all sorts of things in such structures, I like the concept of mandala shaped layouts for gardens and pasturing and intend to integrate animal and garden spaces. I have learned that goats can be trained to coexist with gardens given intelligent training, tending and rotation.

Hello from south east Kansas ! Reading this thread has given me hope in this crazy holiday season. I, too, lead a socially disconnected life in terms of having a local inner circle of friends who are not "green paper chasers". I am currently seeking a pdc (perhaps Lawrence) as well as an internship in which I am able to practice skills. Also looking into work/study opportunities. I am single and embarking on this adventure with a like minded individual is paramount . I am thankful that this website is here! Good luck to all of us in the Midwest.
