This story starts in 2015.

I created some 3 foot tall (countertop height) raised beds to help me garden with my arthritis.

Some years later during replanting I made one of the beds Hügelkultur and the results between the non Hügelkultur and Hügelkultur beds was very evident.

Fast forward to today I no longer suffer from arthritis due to lifestyle changes and turmeric but my 73 year old mother is still trying to garden with two hip replacements, one knee replacement and the other knee replacement on its way.

So I decided to make her these for her:

I intend to add more wood to the top, and then add the topsoil from her garden at ground level to top it all off.
I'll post some more photos when I get the wood layer added.

Those raised beds look great. The difference between the hügelkultur bed and the regular one is pretty striking, especially for something that started as a practical fix for the arthritis. Curious how the moisture retention holds up through summer compared to the standard beds.

I add punky wood to the bottom of my raised beds. This also saves having to bring in a pile of top-soil!

My father gardened before this trick was known and his experience was that raised beds always dried out faster than ground level beds.

However, my friend with multiple health problems would not be able to veggie garden beyond a few pots on her deck, if she didn't use raised beds, and wouldn't be able to afford to buy the soil to fill them - but there's lots of punky wood in our environment.

Any garden is better than no garden, and both the act of gardening and eating the results are both good for the health and soul.

True Hügelkultur is wonderful, but if some of us have to settle for second best, that's still wonderful compared to no garden!

Raised beds at 3 foot high definitely need more water attention during times of drought, but the raised 3 foot Hügelkultur are more forgiving and resilient.

No big issues with water retention this year, it did well and I know the biological action has only just begun.
