Is lake fishing different from river fishing?

Yes.  But many of the principles are the same.  The fishing is best closer to the shore line where the fish find food.  Look for cover and sunken trees.  Sunfish will gather where the sun is directed.  Catfish and carp will basically circle the perimeter constantly and bite more at night. Wherever a stream enters the lake, the fish will gather to eat anything coming downstream.

We just came back from a 3 day trip river fishing.

My dad taught me how to fish when I was a kid and dear hubby and I were into bass fishing.  All were in a boat on a lake.

The water was clear and I did not see any minnows though dear hubby said he did.

Dear hubby fished for bass with lures, the next day he used worms.

I didn't fish because I had a dog to babysit.  The dog got to drink river water and once she fell into the river.

I enjoyed all the wild flowers and watching the way the wind blew the river causing ripples.

Anne glad you experienced a new sport, I always consider fishing and hunting as more reasons to immerse myself in Nature writ large.   Sounds like we concur on that.
If protein makes it home to the family, that's a huge bonus of course.
Ever read A River runs Through It?  Lovely epic novel where fly fishing becomes metaphor for love of life struggles, spiritual growth, and reverence for family.  You might enjoy it.
My one time in Alaska including king salmon on good days with my dad and cousin. This was my personal best on a river......wish I could go back

It depends on a level of an angler :)
At the start, all bodies of water are pretty much the same, you cast into it whatever you've got, and hope for the best.
Then, you start differentiate - for current speed or lack thereof (the stronger the current, the heavier gear and lures)
For the depth, from surface lures to deep diving ones, etc.
So the difference can be none or enormous, depending how you approach fishing.
The species of fish is also important, it is entirely different way of fishing for let's say river brown trout and lake trout.
And season, weather, light, temperature, all play role on the advanced level.

If I had to point out just one difference between fishing lakes and rivers, that would be the way of planning your fishing. On rivers, you have to decide wheather you fish upstream or downstream and adjust your gear and tactics for that, while on lakes you do the same but for shallow or deep first :)

If you're gonna buy things, buy this thing and I get a fat kickback:
