Hi members, we that live outside the US and Canada have been finding it difficult to source Comfrey. This is because most sources that deal in Comfrey roots do not ship outside the US and Canada. I live in Nigeria and I'm in dire need of Comfrey roots (bocking 4 and 14) for planting for my livestocks and to make fertilizer. Please if you can get these for me or you have sources that can ship them to Nigeria please contact me via my e-mail address. I'm, ready to pay whatever price. E-mail: manorims@yahoo.com. Thanks.

2014 comfrey digging has commenced! My prices are the same as last year - $0.50 apiece for medium sized root cuttings and $5 for shipping and handling. Anybody interested?

I would for a large order - depending on where you are there can be quite a few hoops to jump through. Where would you want the comfrey shipped? I know it is hard to get in some areas - I'd be glad to help you get set up growing it, especially if it is hard to find in your region.

We definitely had a few fun optipns, but ended up with a more traditional name: Josephene (in honor of a good friend).

Other more quirky options were:
Camber (I am a structural engineer)
Kefir (the munchkin's favorite food while in the womb)
Aronia (my favorite berry)

I am back up and operational for shipping comfrey after a few days of sleep deprevation training. Turns out I have a noctournal kid...

Ken Grunke wrote:I have several stands of healthy comfrey that need thinning, the time is ripe for digging before the ground freezes. Not sure what strain they are however. Maybe a picture will help, I took this yesterday: http://i.imgur.com/orTYX.jpg

I'm in zone 4, SW Wisconsin.

Willing to go with the same price as original poster, no minimum order. I'm not sure what a "piece" consists of though.

I am interested in some comfrey as well. Is there anyone who is still selling it for $5?

Comfrey is starting to sprout in my area, which means it is loosing its winter root reserves. Cuttings would be best taken within the next couple weeks - anybody else interested?

Hi John,
I'm interested. It is russian comfrey, right? and do you have multiple bockings? Sorry, I'm trying to read back through the thread, but I"m not sure what's changes/is still available. Maybe a PM would be best?

That's correct, I have the two main Russian Comfrey Varieties:

Bocking 4
>Slightly more palatable to livestock
>Higher leaf protein content
>Slightly lower medicinal properties
>More vertical, deep root structure
>More drought resistant
>More Vigorous
>Generally the most suitable choice, unless shallow soils, shallow water table, or growing in large pots
>I expect generally avoids the feeder roots of trees better than Bocking 14

Bocking 14
>Slightly higher medicinal properties
>More spreading, shallow root structure ideal for areas of shallower soils, shallow water tables, or growing in large pots

I am charging $0.50 per cutting, and have a minimum order size of 50 cuttings. I am charging $5 for shipping and handling, and ship USPS fixed-rate boxes, which arrive in a few days.

Due to my busy gardening/family/work life, I generally get shipments out once every week or so worst case scenario. If for some reason you need plants shipped right away, let me know and we can work something out.

Happy gardening!

Hey, I'd love a bunch of 50, please! Mostly B4 if possible, with at least a few B14 for diversity's sake. I'm in Ontario, Canada. Give me a shout at dgreenly@gmail.com. Thanks!

I hate to be 'that guy' but could I ask where this info comes from?

I thought I was pretty well-read on these 2, but haven't come across this at all.

Another good year of comfrey!

I have a large supply of bocking 4 plants, and am phasing out of the bocking 14 variety that I have sold in previous years I found that the much-more-vigorous, drought resistant bocking 4 variety was better suited to all my needs. Prices for 2015 are $0.60 apiece for small cuttings, and $0.85 apiece for medium to large cuttings. Shipping and handling is $6.

Comfrey cuttings are available year-around, though I recommend avoiding an fall/winter/early spring planting if there is any risk of experiencing a deep freeze. Also, some people have a harder time getting comfrey started in dry/hot weather if there is not adequate irrigation, so I advise getting it in the ground as soon as danger of a deep freeze is past, and keeping moist until well established. If you have any questions about the cultivation or uses of this amazing plant, feel free to message me! Planting instructions: Plant root cuttings in a 3 foot grid, 1 to 2 inches deep and keep moist until established after danger of freezing is past.

I'm also curious to know if comfrey attracts deer, and or rabbits?
