Its actually a very common disease that affects budding rocket scientists from ever getting started on their builds because they get caught up analysing everything so much that they become paralysed and therefore don't do anything to even get started.

Stove Chat 23 tip: There are many questions that Matt gets repeated by many people and having to answer all the time. One of them is whether or not his designs can be reduced in size. Through the years, I've seen this question come up also for Peters batch box, J tubes, and RMH's in general, but I think Matt's answers can cover them all fairly good.

In my own words: The size it is now covers a broadly applicable function - heating, cooking, water heating potential etc. The number one limiting factor is the core.
When they start getting smaller they run into all kinds of problems and are much more finicky to operate, but if you are willing to accept a much narrower range of function, then smaller could work. Practicality below a 6" system goes way down. So the bottom line is, what are you willing to give up and how does the stove best suit your needs?

Stove Chat 24 tip: Matt encourages everyone that it doesn't take a workshop full of people to build a RMH, that it can be done alone if needed and certainly not terrifying to build. Our forum leader recently has proven this with 2 batch box conversions under his belt in the last few months.
Also, that most of the complexities of the European masonry heaters out there are not essential for a properly functioning stove - some things just being traditions that are passed down to the next builder. Everything we can do to make these things more easier and approachable will get more people to experience them. So come on out and see how easy it is to join in on the fun. Winter is fast approaching so don't put it off. There is an efficient and clean wood heater with your name on it....you just don't know it yet!

The one thing I've always liked about rocket mass heaters is the broad range in which they can be modified to suit your needs. Then after a year or two if your needs change (or your like me and just like to tinker with a new idea) can be easily dismantled and made into something different. Materials like Clay/sand mortar, cob and stone are so forgiving and are often available right under your feet for free, so there should be no reason to say you can't build one yourself.

Hearing about your ideas and how to make them manifest is what Matt enjoys to talk about which not only benefits you, but also to others who may get inspired too.

Stove Chat 26 tip: Being a rocket scientist means that you have to accept that your best laid out plans don't always work out as smooth as you wished them to be.

For Thomas, it was not cleaning out his system before lighting up his new dragon and now having to deal with all that moisture laden ash from the previous year. He's still working on it as we speak but making progress to get a healthy bill of health from the rocket doctor.
For me, it was getting a fail on my report card from stove master teacher Matt, saying that my firebrick splits were not stacked in a way that was considered a "building technique" and that the holes in my red clay bricks, when they get filled with mortar, might not hold up to the stresses of the heat cycling.

When designing a heat exchanger for your rmh, Matt feels its best to go with a bell design rather than a piped run. He explains this for the following reasons: Least material (no pipes to buy), less labour (a lot less cob to make), less heavy (for second story or weaker floors), more flexible in shape and design (no straight pipes to limit your creativity), efficient at extracting heat (internal surface area is much greater than a pipe run), lower resistance to gas flow (gas is free to roam without forced friction points) etc.
The one place where a piped system can be beneficial is in a long bench run. This would be a great place to make a hybrid system. The pipe helps to better carry the heat down to the opposite end of the bench (which otherwise may take a long time for the gasses to naturally flow down there and heat up) then return to the exhaust opening via the bell space. The pipe can also be shortened to lets say only half way down the bench to better control your preferred heating locations.
Very simple, very flexible...I like it!

For the most part, draft occurs as a result of temperature difference between the intake and the exhaust, also known as ΔT (Delta T).
The bigger the difference, the more draft and vise versa. One way to really help a sluggish draft is to install a bypass. A bypass allows you to change the conditions of your stove to overcome the conditions of the weather and environment.

Its an easy thing to grasp but is often overlooked as we rely so heavily on modern technology to take the place of natural systems and forget how simple and effective nature can be if we give it what it needs to just be itself.

Stove Chat tip #29 You can only extract so much heat from a rmh before it will stop working properly. - Whether it be a lot of metal radiating too much heat, wet cob, water heating coils etc. if there is not enough heat getting to the chimney, draft can be weak and cause your dragon to sputter or even run backwards (not a good dragon!).
This has been a common theme this week where several rocket scientists have experienced this first hand. It is one of many contributing factors in which a rmh will not operate properly and could be something to consider if your having issues as well.

If you are put off building a batch box rmh because of the extra work involved, there are many ways to fabricate the parts needed without having to know how to weld or be a master craftsman to do so. For example, the secondary air delivery system to the firebox of a batch box rmh can be as complex as welding one together or as simple as friction fitted or even screwed in place to produce a satisfactory air channel. If this does not even sound simple enough for you, there soon will be a rocket scientist on permies offering his services and hardware for all your rocket stove needs..... Stove Chat tip #31 - One of the biggest catch 22's to insulating under a rmh on a combustible floor is that by the time you add insulation, the pipe (or bell space), then the thermal mass, the bench becomes too high to comfortably sit on. Matt strongly recommends not compromising on insulation space to lower the bench but rather to build some sort of raised platform or step around the base of the bench instead. A very simple way of solving this problem without risking a potentially dangerous situation of the floor slowly charring over time without you even knowing.

Stove Chat #32 Tip: Efficiency is a lot more than just what the final exhaust temps are at the chimney. For instance, you can have really low stack temps and think your getting really high efficiencies but not be burning clean at the front end of the stove. Heat extraction and efficiency is all about the system as a whole, not just a part of it.

Coppicing is a great way to obtain fuel for a RMH. It can be a local and sustainable source of fuel, little to no splitting needed and can be harvested often with only with loppers.
If coppicing is not your thing or don't have access to this type of fuel, large branches (particularly from Douglas Fir or Tamarack) are particularily dense (which is of great fuel value) that are often discarded.
I'm going to try both these methods next year and see how it works out for me.

Did you know that after the core (the place where all the combustion happens), the shape and choice of materials greatly opens up and is often only limited by your imagination?
Like many things, we have set ideas of how they look based on a set model and often think we can't change them.
Matt shows us a few examples where people have used man hole covers, old glass range cooktops, propane tanks and other objects that were never intended to be used in this manner but fit the bill just great.

A stove may look a bit odd or unattractive at first, but its amazing how a lot of it can be prettied up with cob or some kind of a skin that hides all the functioning parts and leaves you with a fully functional and decorative piece of artwork in your home, boat, trailer, yurt...etc.

The question came up as to why it has been said not to use metal in a RMH, yet many stove designs have a metal barrel on the top? What's up with that?
This is only true for using it as a material to make the core which is then insulated, but when placed anywhere outside of the core, it often is a great choice as a radiant heat source or as a form to shape a bench or manifold.

So Matt's finally been able to get Starlink internet (which I wasn't there last week to experience) but apparently its a much faster connection which would mean less buffering and real time live viewing.
I'm on a satellite internet connection which has often made it choppy so I really look forward to see for myself how much of an improvement it has on the live stream.
