I will soon be moving to 21 acres in south central TN. There's no septic and I'm not planning on putting one in anytime soon, so I obviously need to figure out the bathroom issue. I've looked at the threads here and am a bit overwhelmed. There seem to be so many systems, and I have no clue how to figure out what would be best in my situation.
I'm not asking anyone to take the time to type out Potty 101 (although any posts along that line would be gratefully welcomed), but is there a good resource that would explain advantages, disadvantages, and how to's?
I am currently getting ready to start my own system this year, Im getting my info from a book called the Humanure handbook by Joseph Jenkins, is has more useful info on proper ways to recycle human waste through thermophilic composting.
here is a link to an excellent demonstration video on the same subject.
If you have a library perhaps check if they carry the book in their system
and a talk on sanitation by Joseph
Ferne I second the Humanure Handbook reference. I switched to the Jenkins system 9 months ago and I have no regrets. Joe Jenkins site has a forum dedicated to sanitation and it has a lot of input from people who use the basic collect and compost system. Go to http://humanurehandbook.com/ and use the link to the website. Cheap, easy to set up and maintain and probably the most ethical system in use. From a very practical point of view one of these systems is ideal to start out with since it is so simple and cheap to get up and running. If you then decide to go with a more elaborate system the Jenkins set up is so portable it can be used as a back up emergency system or as a secondary use system in tandem.
Life is too short or my list is too long, not sure which.
If we don't do the shopping, we won't have anything for dinner. And I've invited this tiny ad:
