And they tore it down to the wood. It had been pretty well covered, too. Oops

i feel your pain. This has happened to me more than once Now, I have a hugel close to the chickens and have a huge squashplant growing all over it. I am trying to grow some more permanent stuff inbetween the large leaves - so far, so good. Just have to remember to cut the leaves back if they produce too much shade....

Ive also had that happen. From the looks of it my chickens were eating bugs out of the rotting wood once they got down there.

I feel your pain.

I slowly built a raided hugelkultur bed over the course of the spring and summer. I kept adding layers as time and effort allowed, filling in between the layers with compost, kitchen scraps, seaweed, fish carcasses, and whatever else I had. I guess the bed really is something between a hugel and a lasagna bed. It was my chickens favorite place to hang out this summer. They loved scratching for bugs, or picking out the choice bits of compost and kitchen scraps. They really did a number on it a few times and had created a few serious excavations. I let them enjoy it even though I had to redo their work several times. When I finally decided it was done and planted in it I had to fence the chickens off it.

Chickens are great when they're not being a big pain in the a@#.
