We have lots of mountain ash that are wild in my area, but I am not familiar with the hybrids, so I don't have much information to share on your original topic.
Have you heard that apples can be grafted onto mountain ash root stock? I have not tried this with local varieties yet, but I heard that they do that it Europe.
