Jocelyn and I came up with a format we are gonna try. Unfortunately, Jocelyn is pretty strapped between her day job and all of her other responsibilities.

The format is that we will pick a book, read a chapter, do five to ten minutes of podcast, read another chapter .... and then glue all of the podcast pieces together for a podcast on that book. Maybe cover one or two chapters a day. We're gonna do Gaia's Garden first.

In the meantime, I am ready to try this format out on a different book with somebody that might have a bit more availability than Jocelyn.

I would like to do this with somebody that has listened to all (or nearly all) of my podcasts. You must have access to skype. The pay is utterly zero - which is more than I get paid for these podcasts (maybe I should look into sponsors or something).

If you're interested, please comment here and we'll try to get something figured out.

Well, I'm a podcaster all ready with a rig ready to go. I'd be interested although I'm really only available in the evenings. I do a remote podcast using a program called Mumble. It's easier to do shows with multiple host with it because:everyone can be recorded separatly, so if someone has poor audio I can clean it up without affecting other peoples audio. The mumble software is free and runs well on windows, mac and linux as well as iPhone and android.

I can use Skype as well, it's just a suggestion.

I all ready have edited 3 of your shows so I could throw these together when we get done.

I've begun reading Gaia's Garden all ready but I haven't finished it so it would be a great exersize for me.

I just got off the phone with Jocelyn. She had a really excellent idea of a "book club" format. Where there could be several of us on the skype call. As many as ... five?

So Jocelyn and I are going to record an intro and a review of the preface and forward (second edition does not have a forward) tomorrow morning at 8am pacific time.

Daniel, I sent an email to you asking for your phone number. I'm guessing that you will be better at gluing the pieces together than the rest of us. So it would be good if we were to chat today, if possible.

How do folks feel about this possible "book club" format?

Take your copy of "Gaia's Garden" and read everything before chapter 1.

What is your skype id?

Any chance you would be willing to change your permies display name to be your actual name? Mostly because I don't want to introduce "magicdave" on the podcast or explain the connection.

Tomorrow morning at 9am (mountain time) you will be tied in. I think through skype. I talked to Daniel earlier and we will talk more in a couple of hours about technical details.

Hey buddy I am no expert at anything, buuut I am a person who is well spoken and want your stuff out there. I am doing what I can on my own space and a lot more,shissh! and I have an email in to toby to see if he wants to be involved. But I think that will be the cap for this round.

Although now that i think about it, i'm not sure Daniel can do it because he might be working at this time. So there might be room for one more if Daniel can't do it.

I think that this will go

9am thursday: intro
9am friday: chapter 1
10am saturday: chapter 2
9am sunday: chapter 3

this will get us started

I think we should be able to get a few more chapters in through the week, and then I'll have company for a while.

I don't want to participate right now, maybe another time around. But, I think this is a great idea. I have "Gaia's Garden" on my kindle because Paul and others here recommend it as a starting place. So, I am looking forward to following along and listening to the thoughts of more experienced folks.

My go to book is The Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening by the staff of Organic Gardening & Farming Magazine 1959

My background is in HVAC up to and including industrial steam boilers. With a ceritficate in Diesel Tech.
I once held a Journeyman plumbers license while working with a Master Plumber.
Also have held and hold licenses in pesticide application,backflow prevention,Firearms dealer specializing in ammo reloading,stationary engr.

I have a Skype account, but have never used it.

We tested some stuff. We'll see if it gets better tomorrow.

The sound was a bit wonky. This might require some help from daniel to repair it and edit out the parts where I am saying "jocelyn I can barely hear you"

Dave, i think the problems today with getting you patched in might have had a lot to do with my figuring out the skype conference call stuff.

Hi Paul,

I read through Gaia's Garden over the winter break and it set me on a course to then follow it up with Edible Forest Gardens which I am making my way through currently. I committed to myself to re-read Gaia's Garden again this coming winter. Reading it though this summer again would be a good refresher. It looks like you might already have all your slots filled with guest contributors and I can't make a weekday daytime skype call but would be willing to contribute on a weekend if you find yourself having a session on a weekend and need an extra person let me know.

The Gaia's garden experiment is now underway.

The Sepp Holzer's permaculture experiment is forming. I think it will probably be early evening (5:30 my time) plus maybe some weekends. Let's hear back from Caleb and Daniel.

I wanna see how these turn out before committing to more at this time. But I think this is a good place to prepare for future podcasts of this style. I think the edible forest gardens book would be a good one for the next podcast.

But I also want to make sure podcast participants meet the base criteria:

1) have listened to most of my current podcasts.

2) your display name in the forums is your real name.

3) have skype

Hi Paul,

I have tried now more than six times to change my Display name via the Account Preferences and each time it just keeps my original display name. I have tried to change my password, login/logout and even a different browser but nothing seems to work. Its like my userid is wedged in the DB not allowing a update to the row. Is there someone I can talk to about my issue?

I have listened to most of your podcasts if not all of them, trying to fix my "real name", and I do have a skype account (skype= coldiso)

I work until 5:30 so 6:00pm weekdays would work better for me.

Also I am typically on my own time Saturday afternoon till Monday night.

I could also do an early morning podcast with coffee @ 7ish.

They just published the assessment of the opening chapters of gaia’s garden (http://www.richsoil.com/permaculture/326-podcast-043-gaias-garden-chapters-forward-to-3/). I trust after they conclude that trial we will know more. Its tough to do what they are trying to do though and synchronize with a few people out on the InterNot. I hope it works out, I like the idea and the publication selection is stellar material. Paul and Jocelyn need nominated for some type of hero award if they pull this off.

We are having a great discussion with some glitches. Most of the coordination has been pretty good among us. I am having a great time and am honored to have been invited to join in the discussion.
