Living in the suburb in south Huntsville on 0.65 acres, on a small knob at the southeast end of a somewhat larger hill.
I am into anything that is and is not normal in the way of growing fruits and even edible
mushrooms.
I am growing Asian Pears, Asian Persimmons, Jujube, Three types of raspberries (Baba, Tayberry and Boyne), Blackberries, grapes, muscadines. Plums, Pluots, Figs and Kiwi (Fuzzy and Hardy). I will plant some Schisandra Berry and Pawpaw soon. I do grow some flowering plants but only as pollinators, so whatever is on sale and not quite dead (at Lowes) tends to find its way to my front
yard.
I am finding out that warm weather mushrooms do not survive the bugs here but the cool weather do ok. Most of the mushrooms are from an inside humidity chamber. Shiitake, Lions Mane, Chestnut, Oyster are the usual attempts.
I do a lot of composting including hot composting and tend to have large piles of fresh chips in the abandoned lot next door. I have also expanded the chip pile to the other end of the lot and the neighbors have all they can handle. The church uses a lot also.
I am learning how to propagate plants and am now having some success. Grafting is the next lesson, since past attempts were not good.
I am also building an inside aquaponics system. Don't have
enough time for all the ideas.
Is there anyone else that is
local and tends to go a little overboard, in
sustainable hobbies and enjoys every minute?
Maybe can swap scions, cuttings, plants, ideas???
