What can be done with old store bought yeast? I have several pounds of it that seems completely dead. Maybe it can be miraculously revived somehow but I don't have much hope for that. It's living organisms after all.

I figure it won't hurt a compost pile but there must be something more useful to use it for. Any suggestions?

You can use it like nutritional yeast. I usually toast up old yeast and sprinkle it on popcorn.
