Author - Matthew Dicks
Publisher - New World Library

Summary

New World Library says, "Whether we realize it or not, we are always telling stories. On a first date or job interview, in a sales presentation or therapy appointment, with family or friends, we are constantly narrating events and interpreting emotions and actions. In so doing, we make choices about what to emphasize and what to leave out. We frame and explain in order to amuse, rationalize, or just plain vent. The author, acclaimed for his storytelling on stages, the radio, and in novels including Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend, is also an award-winning teacher.

His wonderfully straightforward and engaging tips and techniques for constructing, telling, and polishing any story show that anyone can learn to be an appealing storyteller; that everyone has something story worthy to express; and, perhaps most importantly, that the act of creating and telling a tale is a powerful way of understanding and enhancing one’s own life.

Matthew Dicks is a bestselling novelist, thirty-six-time Moth StorySLAM champion, and five-time GrandSLAM champion. In addition to his widespread teaching, writing, and performing, he cofounded (with his wife) Speak Up, which produces sold-out storytelling performances throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York at least once a month. He lives in Newington, Connecticut. His website is www.MatthewDicks.com"

About the Author

New World Library says, "Matthew Dicks is the internationally bestselling author of the novels Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend, Something Missing, Unexpectedly, Milo, The Perfect Comeback of Caroline Jacobs, and the upcoming novels The Other Mother and Cardboard Knight. His novels have been translated into more than 25 languages worldwide.

He is also the author of the rock opera The Clowns and the musicals Caught in the Middle, Sticks & Stones, and Summertime. He is a columnist for Seasons magazine and has published work in Reader's Digest, The Hartford Courant, Parents magazine, The Huffington Post, and The Christian Science Monitor.

When not hunched over a computer screen, Matthew fills his days as an elementary school teacher, a storyteller, a speaking coach, a blogger, a wedding DJ, a minister, a life coach, and a Lord of Sealand. He has been teaching for 20 years and is a former West Hartford Teacher of the Year and a finalist for Connecticut Teacher of the Year.

Matthew is a 36-time Moth StorySLAM champion and five-time GrandSLAM champion whose stories have been featured on their nationally syndicated Moth Radio Hour and their weekly podcast.

Matthew is also the cofounder and creative director of Speak Up, a Hartford-based storytelling organization that produces shows throughout New England. He teaches storytelling and public speaking to individuals, corporations, and school districts around the world.

Matthew is married to fellow teacher, Elysha, and they have two children, Clara and Charlie. He grew up in the small town of Blackstone, Massachusetts, where he made a name for himself by dying twice before the age of eighteen and becoming the first student in his high school to be suspended for inciting riot upon himself."

Homework for Life

From the video description:
"Homework for Life' is a strategy that I originally began using to generate more story topics for the stage, but as I began to use the strategy daily, it changed my life. It made everything about my life so much more vivid and slowed my life down remarkably. It's a strategy I teach to my storytelling classes often, and I've had people tell me that it has replaced therapy and meditation for them. It truly changes lives. Powerful.    "

I give this book 10 out of 10 acorns!

I think that Storyworthy does an awesome job of teaching through demonstration the art of "finding, crafting, and telling stories that will connect you to other people!"

Storyworthy is well-organized, with three parts that are divided into chapters with short story breaks between them. Part 1 focuses on Finding Your Story; Part 2 is about Crafting Your Story, and Part 3 is about Telling Your Story. I found this organization of information to be logical and compelling. Within almost every chapter, one or more personal stories are shared by Matthew to explain a concept or idea, which was very helpful. I enjoyed the personal stories that Matthew shared a lot!

I believe that the experiences that Matthew shares in Storyworthy, along with the way he shares them, create a pleasureable, honest, and touching book!

Overall, I recommend reading Storyworthy, because the art of personal storytelling connects with and engages people! I think almost everybody could gain something by reading Storyworthy, since good and compelling communication skills are helpful in building relationships with others!

One word caught my attention : persuade. I am not sure I am happy to see this word in this context of story-telling. I think we want to persuade more than to be persuaded! In a wide sense, this is manipulation, and we have a fear to be manipulated in a wrong way if we believe false stories. I see stories as a way to tell my world and where I am, but not to persuade at all. I want to be a firm point with my firm opinion, so that others can lean on it and push and rebound. We all need to integrate what happens around us, and we need connection for this to happen.
