Basically, I'm looking for a permaculture mentor or buddies in central Alabama. I'm so new to permaculture, even though I have a degree in biology.

We live in central Alabama and have also been looking for others interested in permaculture. We are in the process of developing a forest garden for the City of Montevallo and would love others input. Also, we have an open Facebook group called Central Alabama Permaculture Enthusists. Anyone is welcome to join in on the conversation.

South Alabama here. Feel free to stop by when you head to the beach.
My yard is not yet a food forest, but I have over 25 fruit trees and growing!

We saw many beautiful farms in Foley when we were down for Mardi Gras. If we had not had a car full of people, we would have stopped by some of the nurseries there. Do you know of anybody that has pawpaw trees? Our source in North Alabama is sold out.

I don't know anyone local with pawpaws, but Willis Nursery usually has them. I've ordered from them before, and have quince, olive, and grapes on order now.

Sorry we won't get to meet you this time, but please do let us know when you'll be back through again. I would have liked to show you some of the great permaculture things happening in town, but--as it turns out--we're likely to have rain and flooding (at the forest garden) for several days.

How nice to see others from Montevallo.

I'm a beginner on permaculture, although I had a solid upbringing that involved dumpster diving, growing our own food, herbal medicine, harvesting rain and other things that you just don't realize as a child. To me it was all normal. Now that I am a mother myself I begin to see those lessons reflected in what I do.

The 9-5 rat race to own, own, own is not for me. Never has been.

But, I used to work 50-60 hours a week as a fastfood manager.. Did that for a few years, doing nothing but working, sleeping and thinking about working. I'm an artist at heart, and I used to sell some, before I got an actual job.

Long story short. I now sell a little art ($300 a month on average) to supplement my fiance's manager job. Utilities are just getting higher and higher and I'm done handing them more money.

I've looked into collecting rain, solar cooking, solar panels etc. etc. I like things uncomplicated and inexpensive, like most folks, I guess haha.

I feel I have a good grasp on basic growing of fruits and vegetables, although I am still learning to working with the Alabama soil. We are starting with chickens this year, which should improve my composting and soil quality. I am really interested in alternative methods such as the hugelkultur and improving the soil by growing certain plants.

So uh. Hi!

Hi, Sietske:), we're glad to meet you, too. There are actuallyany permaculturally minded, sustainability focused people in Montevallo. Many of us belong to a FB group called central Alabama permaculture enthusiasts (CAPE). There we exchange ideas, offer support, share others successes.

We'd love to learn more about you. Look us up?

Hello All.

I am mot a premaculture implementer but have studies and followed the movement for years. I am recently divorced and would like to relocate to Baldwin county. I would love to connect with Food Forest implemtetors in the deep South to share do, don'ts, cultivars. etc.

I just bought ten acres of crappy land a lil NW of Butler, near Lisman. It's 3 hours from my job in Ocean Springs, and the same from my family in Foley, but I expect to be up there clearing, cleaning, and planting every other weekend for a few years. Anybody that enjoys pulling up Kudzu feel free to stop by.
