How nice to see others from Montevallo.
I'm a beginner on permaculture, although I had a solid upbringing that involved dumpster diving, growing our own food, herbal medicine, harvesting rain and other things that you just don't realize as a child. To me it was all normal. Now that I am a mother myself I begin to see those lessons reflected in what I do.
The 9-5 rat race to own, own, own is not for me. Never has been.
But, I used to work 50-60 hours a week as a fastfood manager.. Did that for a few years, doing nothing but working, sleeping and thinking about working. I'm an artist at heart, and I used to
sell some, before I got an actual job.
Long story short. I now sell a little
art ($300 a month on average) to supplement my fiance's manager job. Utilities are just getting higher and higher and I'm done handing them more money.
I've looked into collecting rain,
solar cooking, solar panels etc. etc. I like things uncomplicated and inexpensive, like most folks, I guess haha.
I feel I have a good grasp on basic growing of fruits and vegetables, although I am still learning to working with the Alabama soil. We are starting with
chickens this year, which
should improve my composting and soil quality. I am really interested in alternative methods such as the
hugelkultur and improving the soil by growing certain plants.
