Housing Rabbits in Hot Climates

Here's some good info on a cage/hutch design that enables folks to have rabbits in hot climates. They averaged more than 40 kits/yr per doe with this system, which is an excellent rate, especially in desert climates.

Ummm...what about snakes? Snakes like underground areas and they like rabbits. I have a feeling this may not be a really great solution in a climate that breeds lots of snakes.

No land yet, but growing what I can with what I have!

Any ideas on how to protect rabbits from snakes?
I'm planning on setting up underground housing connected to an outdoor run. Protection from cats, foxes, wild boars, dogs and genets is complicated enough, mainly with fencing... but I am afraid snakes could get to the rabbits through the fence. When walking around here, snakes aren't a rare sight, or their footprints on footpaths.
Electrified fences aren't an option as someone who'd be around often wears a pacemaker.

I've read that rat cones on the legs of the cages will protect against snakes. Also, if you use thinner wire, like 1/4", there is no way a snake can get through that. Even 1/2" would probably work.
