So apparently, I'm the friend who knows about computers - que massive audience laughter.  No, but seriously, they ask me these questions!  I haven't figured out what an app is or why it isn't small bits of finger food.

A flip phone bought circa 2010 is still working great.  The best thing about it is the battery.  It's usually charged three or four times a year.  Last charging is in September and checked it today and it's only half empty.  And yes, it has been turned on and off and made several phone calls in that time.

But this was bought before it was required that all phones sold in Canada are unlocked or unlockable.

How do I find out if this phone is unlocked or unlockable?  It says it's Samsung SGH-C414R  It makes and receives calls and is black with buttons.

If you have, or know someone with a SIM for a different Telecom, you can plug that in and it will or will not connect - depending if it’s locked or unlocked.

But I guess this won’t help if these phone doesn’t have a SIM card.

It has a card inside it that tells it what phone number belongs to it and we can save phone numbers to the card memory.  It lives under the battery.  Is that a SIM card?

That is the sim card. Really your best bet is to take it into a phone store and ask. In the US most phones aren't unlocked unless you make an effort to seek that out, but pretty Mich everything that isn't an iPhone or a fanxu Google phone (pixel I think?) Is unlockable.

If it was built before the law changed it is almost certainly locked. Any phone shop will be able to check it for you and unlock it if needed. I also have a flip samsung as my main phone, and in full use it still only needs charging once a week.

If it is unlocked, you can usually find an unlock code on eBay for $1 or less. I've unlocked all my hand-me-down phones over the past few years through this method with great success. I'm also in Canada, so I know it works for Canadian carriers.

Get me the mayor's office! I need to tell him about this tiny ad:
