I want to start a batch of sourdough starter, but my mother lives with us and was recently prescribed an inhaled antibiotic. She breathes it in through a nebulizer twice a day for 28 days on, then 28 days off, repeating for several rounds. I read recently that if someone in a household is taking an antibiotic then everyone in the house is getting it as well. (!!!) I suspect this is even more true with a vapor based drug.
My question is, will this affect a sourdough culture? Will the starter consume the antibiotic or grow it? I've made sourdough in the past and love the process. I really don't want to table this project but I'm unsure whether or not to move forward.
Thank you for your response. I do have an enclosed back porch and it honestly didn't even occur to me to put it out there. It's unheated but I have a shelf set-up with some grow lights and a heat lamp and some clear vinyl. That should work! I do feel good about keeping it out of the house. It seems logical that that there would be some kind of effect even if I don't know exactly what that would be. At best, besides doing nothing, it would only kill the yeast, if antibiotics even do that. At worst, it could mutate into something really weird.
