On one hand, offering produce for free if you can't
sell it seems like a no-brainer. Take the tax loss, and make a fine community minded gesture. Everybody wins, sort of.
On the other hand, what would the farm's insurance policy cover? Surely not public access -- unless they purchase additional coverage, which can't be paid for in potatoes. Then somebody claims they stubbed their toe and the landowner is mired in lawsuits, which also can't be paid for in potatoes.
Sorry for the downer, folks. But the devil is in the details.
