One should be a little weary of what they use for hugelkulture materials. The biomass should come from an area free of contaminants, which rules out stuff that comes from roadsides or most urban areas. You should find someone with land who doesn't spray to get logs, branches, roots, etc. If you use stuff from areas that are next to roads, streets, or anywhere that has been sprayed with herbicides in the past 10 years, most likely some of those chemicals, or their derivatives, will find their way into your food.
