Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to add allantoin to salve since it must be dissolved into alcohol or water to dissolve properly. Salve doesn't contain water so I'm trying to figure out if it can infact be added to salve at all.
Thanks Janice
Like Joylynn, I also make my own salves using dehydrated comfrey leaves and roots from plants that I have grown myself. I steep the comfrey in extra virgin olive oil and use one part beeswax to four parts infused oil. After straining the infused comfrey oil, you could either combine it with the other oil that you are using to make your salve or steep the strained infused comfrey oil with the other ingredients that you are using in your salve. I read somewhere that the comfrey roots contain the greatest concentration of allantoin.
Thanks so much everyone for all of the information you gave me, it's a huge help!🙂 The salves you showed look beautiful, I also make my own salves (plantain) and have come to realize just how important they are in our family. I recently made an anti chafing cream for my husband who has recently started cycling, I wanted to add allantoin but couldn't because it requires water to dissolve so next time I will do an infusion with comphrey.
I make salves and mostly use the alcohol intermediary method to make them. It can't be used for all herbs, but for most. It's a very fast way to get the goodness of the herbs into the oils and often more effective, too. For the allantoin you would simply dissolve the allantoin in the alcohol before adding the alcohol to the herbs. Here is a tutorial explaining the method:
