I'd like to make an oregon grape
root balm/ointment/topical remedy for my psoriasis. Sadly, it doesn't seem like it extracts well into oil. People usually extract it via alcohol or
water. A water extract doesn't seem too shelf-stable and hard to apply.
I worry about extracting into alcohol, though, because the alcohol doesn't seem like a good thing to put on psoriasis. We also don't have alcohol in our house other than isopropyl alcohol and hand sanitizer (ethyl alcohol + hydrogen peroxide + coconut oil + Glycerol). But, if I extracted the oregon grape root into alcohol and then added oil and maybe beeswax, and let it heat up or just evaporate, would the drying properties of the alcohol go away, but the beneficial oregon grape root stuff stay?
I fear that I (A) don't know
enough about alcohol's properties and therefore am waaay off the mark, and (B) I'm confused about balm/salve making with an alcohol extract. So, please set me straight!
And, if you can think of another way to make an effective, shelf-stable oregon grape root topical concoction, I would love to hear about it!
Thank you!!
