I don't remember which herbalist recommended it, but it was one of the popular ones.
For an herb that doesn't extract well in oil, she recommended a light coating of alcohol. Just enough for the dried herb to rehydrate a bit. This recipe uses leafy herbs, so I don't know how it translates to roots.
After rehydrating with alcohol overnight, infuse the herbs in the oil for however many weeks is called for.
To evaporate some of the alcohol, gently heat the oil (uncovered) and keep it uncovered as it cools. This won't remove all of the alcohol, but it supposedly will reduce it.
I made an oil of dried plantain from these instructions. I want to make a salve to use on eczema, but I still hesitate to with the alcohol. It just sounds like it would burn. I've just been making strong teas to soak or spray on my affected areas before applying a non-alcoholic salve.
(Reminder to myself) God didn't say, "well said, well planned, and well thought out." He said, "well done."
