Hi Denise, one house we owned in the Phoenix area was north facing with windows and sliding glass doors on the south side. We had an open arbor structure over the patio with grapes planted at the base of each post and the posts sent in a bricked in bed filled in with river rock. The grapes thrived in this, grew up the posts, and covered the arbor in summer giving that side of the house plenty of shade. During the winter, the grapes died back allowing the sun through the arbor to warm the house.
One of the things I really liked about that house. It worked well.
