That's funny, I can't always get them to grow either, I think maybe the whispy bits which appear are fragile and need protection from bigger plants sometimes until they can get bigger and featherier?  I've been more fortunate with carrots, but yeah they can be hit and miss.  Hopefully next year you can neglect them again and duplicate this success.

Uhh... I might of made a planting mistake.

My pumpkins are doing good. Too good. The vines have filled the entire pumpkin patch and are still spreading. I had an eight foot buffer zone of wood chips between the patch and my house. HAD.  The vines are already touching my house! I have vines extending into my flower gardens and my pollinator gardens. I have pumpkin leaves reaching up about hip height! Intermixed between these pumpkin vines are watermelon vines filling in the gaps to the point I can barely walk through the growing patch.

This is a most excellent problem. I can't wait to see what I get in the fall.

I can't help but smile like a fool every time I look at my pumpkin patch. The happiness this mess of vines brings me is priceless. There have been a couple losses at the edges of the mass as deer smash and nibble immature fruit but deep in the leaves is growth. While I did not plan to have the patch reach into my flowering spaces, it isn't the end of the world. I will just have to plan better next year!

Lovely. Thanks for letting me know this exists. I'll cruise around and see what I can see. I love these long-term gardening diaries.

You can cook the pumpkin leaves and eat them, we're trying it tonight for the first time.

Postscript:  We didn't like that, the texture didn't work for my husband and I both.  I sort of hoped that cooking would ... make the texture better but it didn't.  So I guess I'll go back to taking off extra leaves to mulch under the plants.

Timothy, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your homestead journal from start to finish today.  I've been on the road for over a year, so have really missed digging in the dirt, playing with chickens and dogs, and spreading chips all over the place.

I'm moving to my new homestead in KY next week, and though it is nearly fall I'm going to plant a bunch of stuff in 5 gal buckets and hopefully get a greenhouse built before first frost so I can keep a few things growing all winter.  I might have to pick up some grow lights and utilize the sun porch instead.   Either way, I'll grow something.  Time's a-wasting.

Good luck with your harvest.

A pumpkin vine had managed to stretch all the way to my foundation where a pumpkin formed. I, being unaware of the pumpkin, discovered it today and found it to be firmly stuck in place between a piece of house siding and rocks underneath. I had to work on excavating underneath the pumpkin to finally free it. I believe the fruit will be salvageable and will continue to grow in its corrected place. It really is something new every day!

My pumpkins have been making boyflowers but are just starting to make girlflower buds, you're way ahead of me, but my first set of plants failed due to the experiment I did on them.  Glad you're getting pumpkins in funny places haha!
