That's funny, I can't always get them to grow either, I think maybe the whispy bits which appear are fragile and need protection from bigger plants sometimes until they can get bigger and featherier?  I've been more fortunate with carrots, but yeah they can be hit and miss.  Hopefully next year you can neglect them again and duplicate this success.

Uhh... I might of made a planting mistake.

My pumpkins are doing good. Too good. The vines have filled the entire pumpkin patch and are still spreading. I had an eight foot buffer zone of wood chips between the patch and my house. HAD.  The vines are already touching my house! I have vines extending into my flower gardens and my pollinator gardens. I have pumpkin leaves reaching up about hip height! Intermixed between these pumpkin vines are watermelon vines filling in the gaps to the point I can barely walk through the growing patch.

This is a most excellent problem. I can't wait to see what I get in the fall.
