This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in textiles.

In this project, you will design and weave a small bag or purse.  Techniques and looms are up to you.  Your warp-faced, weft-faced, or balanced weave bag must be big enough to hold a book or tablet, have two pockets, a woven strap, and be sturdy/durable.

To complete this BB, the minimum requirements are:
 - weave a small bag or purse with a woven strap and two pockets
 - use natural materials that are sturdy
 - finish ends and attach button/hardware

To document your completion of the BB, provide proof of the following as pictures or a video (less than two minutes):
 -  the loom and materials you're starting with (materials can be on the loom)
 - the weaving in progress with your loom/technique visible
 - the finished bag with the book/tablet you designed it for preferably with a ruler or tape measure visible
 - short explanation of your choice of weave structure and why it is suitable for a bag

Hmm ... maybe I can do this BB. I already started something on my 'loom' (I got it as a young teenager, in the 1970s). I wasn't sure what it would become, but I think such a bag is possible. Probably this will not be finished soon, because I have many other projects too ...

What a cool project!  I'm surprised that no one has tried it yet.  I have some questions...

Natural materials - like cotton or linen thread that you can buy?

Can I use my previously woven practice bands in the construction, like the above sample?  If not, I'll just break out my faithful rigid heddle

Hi (does someone read this to answer questions?).
I think I'm almost finished, at least with the weaving.
Now I have a question:
it must have two pockets ... what does this mean exactly? Do I line it with whatever (natural) fabric and sow two (small) pockets on that lining? Or do I make the lining in such a way it divides the inside of the bag in two? Or do I have to weave a sort of panel to divide the bag in two?
Or is it up to my own choice?

Yeah! My bag is finished!
Here the needed photos.

Materials: fairly course natural linen thread for the warp, lots of leftovers of woolen yarn for the weft. Most of the wool is in natural colours or plant-dyed.

My loom. A children's loom from the early 1970s (I have it that long and learned weaving on it).

Weaving the 'shoulder strap' in the 'back strap' way, with a plastic heddle bought in a thrift store.

Weaving in the short ends of the warp

Weaving in the longer ends of the other side of the warp

Weaving in the ends of the weft (where I changed colour)

Is the size right to take this book with me?

Shoulder strap attached to the bag (it forms the sides too)

Making the lining 'with two pockets' from what once was a duvet cover (linen-cotton blend fabric)

Finished! With lining, two pockets, woven shoulder strap and even a braided band with a ring to attach to my key-purse and a loop that closes around the mother-of-pearl button.
The book fits in one pocket and the other things (of course I need to take my glasses!) in the other one.

Showing the two pockets inside

The proud maker/owner (me) with the bag.
