I have a small, urban
permaculture area in my backyard (1/10th acre) that I've been developing over the last few years-
chickens, raised beds, berry hedge, small fruit orchard (5 dwarfed
trees),
water catchment, etc. The trees are in a 20x30' area surrounded by
chicken wire fencing with about 6" of
wood chips as the floor. The
chickens have full access to the area and love it for shade, cover from aerial predators and dust bathing. I do have low plastic edging at the base of the
fence and the setup keeps most of the dirt/chips inside, but could be better. I recently did my annual pruning and thought that the straightish, thin ones actually might work well knit in around the base of the
fence to help hold in more of the dirt/chips.
Here is my concern: Since these will be dead branches from the same trees, will they attract damaging insects that will also do damage to those live fruit trees? Will this possibly encourage bacterial or other diseases?
I realize this appears to be an odd question considering all of the decaying wood chips in the immediate area, but I haven't had any apparent problems over the last two years from this practice. The chips aren't from these trees, but are from ground out stumps from neighbors that have had trees removed. For what it is worth, I have 2 apricot, and one peach, pear and plum tree in the orchard. The tree I'm most concerned with is the peach which has leaf curl problems that I fight every year.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
