Vertical Hugelkultur

Hi Everyone,

Because of the inspiration I got from reading your site this year I started my own Hugelkultur beds, holes, and tubs!
Been having the best garden yet at my house because of it.
So thanks all.

I've observed, quite unexpectedly, that plants over logs placed vertically in the beds don't wilt. Whereas plants over logs placed horizontally do wilt as normal plants do in heat and sun.

While reading through the extensive HK thread in this forum I came across a reference to vertical vs. horizontal logs. One hypothesis was that vertical logs would act like straws for the plants. Perhaps this is in fact true!

I was reading through hugelkultur posts and found this one very interesting.  
I just wanted to say, I had bought Mike Oehler's CDs about building underground house, and one thing he mentioned:
if you use logs for the supports, turn them upside down, because trees pull water UP from below;  if you turn them upside down, they will not pull water UP.  
In the case of vertical hugelkultur, perhaps it would work the opposite way?  
Turn the logs right-side-up, so the logs' method of pulling water upwards will work to draw water UP.
I had loaned the Oehler CDs to someone years ago, and forgot who, so they're gone;  but I remember what he said about the direction the logs are facing and how they will not pull water upwards IF they are turned upside down.
