Besides having basil in my herb garden, I also grow it in my veggie garden. I've read basil is an amazing companion plant for just about everything. I have a basil plant in just about every one of my veggie beds.
The other evening I was watering and getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. Up until now there weren't any, but now they are making up for lost time. I hate repellent, so I was just suffering.
All of my basil is doing well, but one plant is very happy. It's about 2' high, and almost that in diameter. I noticed it had a bunch of flowers, so I started trimming them off. Then I noticed I wasn't getting bit anymore. It was amazing. I didn't crush the leaves, or rub it on myself. Yet no more bites. Not on my arms, my neck, not even my legs.
When I was done I took the trimmings to the chickens. I was out about an hour after that and didn't get one more bite. I have read basil is a good mosquito repellent, but I have read that about lots of plants and flowers, and most I have tried just didn't do anything. I'm definitely going to be testing this. It would be great to have something that smells good, is easy to grow, and isn't toxic repel mosquitoes. Yeah Basil!
