In the past I have collected Caragana seeds by picking the pods right before they were ready to pop and letting them dry in a bucket, this system worked good but is hard on the hands.

I have heard there is an easier way to harvest the seeds by putting a tarp underneath the tree and letting the pods pop naturally. I tried this method this year by placing a large tarp (10×12) under a thick clump of trees. I may have placed it there a day late and missed some of the early poppers.

I left it there for three days and all the pods were popped at this point. After cleaning up the chaff and leaves I was left with a handful of seeds. Nothing remarkable but enough to spread around. Next year if I want more seeds again I will pick the pods before they pop.

I don't even bother with the seeds anymore. These things spread so easily from the root I just go out and dig up the ones that are growing where I don't want them to and move them. Much easier!

I agree for places I want one that works well but I am collecting seeds of all kinds to broadcast over multiple acres.

Would you turn that thing down? I'm controlling a mind here! Look ... look at the tiny ad ...
