Hello,

I have written this thread with the intention of obtaining as much information from people who have experience with creating Youtube content, so that I may have less unknowns so I may feel more confident in deciding the risks.

For many years now people have been asking me to make a youtube channel to educate, teach, entertain.
My hesitation has been mainly that I do not like taking photos or talking about things, as I rather be learning and doing and developing, rather than teaching, showing etc.

My other hesitations are
The learning curve, in order to achieve a viable channel,
How many weeks of study and practice, it will take to become proficient in editing, filming and directing.
Software licencing,
start up costs,
Personal privacy,
Trade marks and intellectual property,
marketing,
Finding and managing the sweet spots of the system.
The opportunity costs in different facets such as expediting the editing system externally,

If I decide to choose to undertake this opportunity, I will also be looking for mentors to help me narrow down my different plans for the next 3 years.

All advice, information, suggestions, stories of experience are wanted!

Sincere Regards,
Alex

with youtube what really matters is the title, thumbnail, engagement and video quality if you can tick all those boxes and be constant then you can grow. It is a process though, my first year i only gained 5k subscrbers on my way to 25k now

just get a GoPro and go for it, dont overthink things. im assuming your thinking of creating your own unique content. disregard if your thinking of copying other peoples stuff and editing it together, or using content or music that is copyright protected, I think that's where you need licensing.
most of internet stuff like eBay or youtube one you start clicking the buttons it weaves you thought whatever to get done what you want to.

Yep, 100%
So what amount of time have you put into your channel?

How long have you been doing YouTube for?

If it is allowed within the forum, would you please post a link?

Questions,
What about how long the videos are!
viewer engagement!
Target audiences!
Brand Management!
Growth trends!

Um, No you need a plan, you need a target audience, you need to build a brand. this is why the wiggles are Suggessful!
A band of students studying education together at Uni, went to the abc with the most well structured proposal to be seen at the time, all of it was well planned from wearing skivvies that the audience wore at the time, to build a bond, and not be a bunch of adult males. catchy songs and simple colours, easy to follow actions and hand movements.

My 3 year plan, is to do upto 1 video a week, 2 would be exponentally better but would require to much involvement!
My content would be directed for the quick in an out viewer, under 5 minutes.
a bi annual QnA
I would plan on filming 3 months of content in one weekend, and slow releasing it. as this seems to be more efficient.
I have a few models that appear to be logical paths,
one is aimed at children,

another is aimed other young adults, with a focus on showing things that can only be known from experience.

And another is where I try to do a tasks.
Like ripping apart a gum tree with my bare hands.
Moving tons of rocks by hand.
clearing vast amounts of land.
taking apart a brick wall brick by brick and using the bricks to build a patio.
Bail out all the water out of a pool with a bucket.
peel 1 cubic ton of potatoes.
catch wild birds bare handed.
catch 1000 fly's with my hands in day.
teach how to kill spiders with just your thumb.
Set a channel to a randomly picked device, with randomly picked objects.
completing tasks provided by audience.
And hate watching MacGyver. they call it reaction videos, But hate watch would be more accurate. It is just so Irritating, the science concepts are correct but the application is done so wrong!

Or  just share some of my innovations,

Alex,

It seems to me that you already have a plan and it sounds like a good one.  I suggest getting the Go Pro and start filming your projects.  I think 1 video/week is a good pace.

Sounds good, it would be good to practice the process and train my skills before entering the space.

building a brand I guess is if your wanting to make a business of it.
I guess I should not assume anything
I was thinking maybe you were wanting to make video for youtube of what your doing, like I guess for example, here's how I go about planting my garden, or maybe here's how I go about identifying mushrooms out in the woods, or here's what I do to build a chicken coop.
I guess I wasn't thinking off it as a business plan.
sounds like your figuring it out getting advice as to how to proceed to put together what your thinking of doing

Hey,

Current progress from this weekend,
First attempts have been cringe worthy,
I had some eggs that are past due by so I decided to try and make a video where I go and collect moss from the bush and propagate it with the eggs.
And filming myself eating a whole Jar of veggie mite straight from the Jar.
this process currently has been making a record of every area to improve!
This is not natural for me!

What size was the vegemite jar you consumed?

I have been involved in making a motorcycle TV for 10 years, I have done many other projects as well.
I found watching other films on the topics I am interested in revealed lots of things I would not want to present myself.
For example;
Say to overall topic is working and living on 10 acres.
- long introductions or rambling on
- talking about last weekends rodeo before discussing chicken sexing
- speaking quickly and not clearly
- having a wireless or TV on in the background
- joking with people off screen
- saying um, err, long pauses of silence.
- reinforcing your message by repeating it 2 or 3 times.
- moving the camera too quickly causing the viewers to fall off their chairs
- having heavy metal music, sex pistols, grunge, hill billy music in the background.
- telling jokes nobody understands
- keep the camera lens and your speaking focused.
- including animals or children can lead to disasters, an olde comment actors have often spoken of.
Apart from that the rest should come easily!

There are techniques on scripting, content etc that can be learned elsewhere.

As for editing etc I am aware of good systems available, my mate did that and I just stood back, but I could follow it up if you want.
Australia is a big place, as big as North America, what part are you in Alex
