Does placement of raised beds really matter?  I would like to place them in an east/west position, but from what I have read, north/south is preferred.  True, or not necessarily ?

Arranging the beds to avoid shadows is more important than North-South or East-West orientation.

I agree with Eric - orientation is not as important as other factors like  shade, depth, etc.

What do you intend on growing in the beds - that will help you determine where to place them as well.

I would also consider prevailing wind directions, particularly early and late season. The beds may need protection from wind, or actually need wind to prevent mold depending on the biggest risk factors in your ecosystem.
