Has anyone had any luck with growing chestnut trees in alkaline soil?  I live in the rocky mountains of ID.  I know alkaline clay is not ideal, but sometimes not ideal works?   Thanks!

Our area is deep deep chalk, with surface clay deposits. It tends towards very alkaline.

The romans brought chestnuts to the UK as a food crop, and they are now the predominant species in our ancient managed woodlands in the south east of england. They have been coppiced for hundred of years, and some individual stools can easily get to 400+ years old.

I say go for it and don't worry.
