I'm always very careful with my blades. I respect them. I know they can remove appendages just as well as they cut wood.
Sometimes I forget to respect the wood itself. I did that just now. I started trying to split the sapwood off a section of a log. It was twisted too much to fully split with my little axe, so I was going to get my nata to rive it. Somehow when I grabbed the wood with my off hand my thumb found its way into the split just before the axe came out. Being that it wasn't fully split the twist closed it hard on the meat of my thumb.
I still barely have the axe blade in the mouth of the split but it's closing tight... I do not panic because I don't want to throw my hand into the axe, but it is hurting like hell. So after a few seconds I very careful wrench the flesh out. It seems like I'll get out of this with not just a blood blister, but more importantly a lesson in respect.
Respect your wood.
