ways that we might improve our in-email unsubscribe stuff

We have a rich set of email stuff.  I think it is really nice.

Once in a long while we get somebody that says "it is impossible to unsubscribe!"  And when I look at the dailyish, I see

to unsubscribe or fiddle with your email settings: https://permies.com/e/7t4240

And when I click on that, it takes me directly to a list of all email stuff with check boxes.  Complete with a "save preferences" button at the bottom.

Always works.  Seems super simple.  (of course, if a person hasn't logged in for the last month or two, they will need to log in)

So I think the problem isn't with our software, but with a person that might be struggling with a lot of other stuff in their life.  So anything we do probably won't make that person happy.  We should devote our resources to other projects.

Some sites have just one thing they do.  So you are either in or out.  You can click on "unsubscribe" and you get an email to confirm the unsubscribe, and you are all done.  But we have a dozen options - not as simple.  I think our current solution is about as simply as we can make it.

It is possible that my experience is super charmed.  I use desktop mode almost exclusively - maybe the mobile view does have problems and instead of somebody telling us about it we just get a rare "it is impossible to unsubscribe!"

So let's get started.  What's the dealio?  How's our unsubscribe stuff?

For the options below, click on the thumbs up (or "+1" for mobile view) for anything you like.

It is awful - you need to do something immediately.

There are things that could be smoother, but they are minor.  I can cope.

I am currently trying to unsubscribe from any emails. I have gone through the link and looked at all the email preferences. I have not found a general 'unsubscribe from all emails' option. If it exists, can it be made more obvious? If it doesn't exist, can it? And I am happy with my life so that is certainly not the issue.

Paul, I just tried both flavors.
From the desktop (already logged in) link opens a new tab, right to the page with the email settings
From the mobile (oh, I'm not logged in) ugh, okay, login, switch tabs, refresh... okay here I am again.
Not so bad...but then...

As a user, scrolling and deselecting through a dozen options to the end to save the changes, is a bit frustrating, if you really just want out (or a break).

I think two new buttons at the top of the list might help.
Button A would be "Snooze emails from Permies for 30 days"  (if selected, maybe there's an option that PM notifications persist? email settings would resume after 30 days) (and maybe this should always skip one monthly-ish, and not send one on the 31st day...*shakes hand at Paul the calendar*)
Button B would be "Opt out of ALL emails from Permies until I change my settings again"  (if selected, maybe a confirmation email (ha ha!) with a link back to the settings page. for later use.)

If button A or button B are chosen, then have a pop-up confirmation: "Do you want to snooze/opt out?" (NO, keep my email settings as they are) (YES, I'd like to snooze/opt out, and save my settings)

It would be three clicks: the link in an email takes one to the settings page, button A or B (the top buttons), then confirm in a pop-up window. (Possibly with a detour to login.)

There is this option way down at the end of the list (I didn't select it)
Add one-click unsubscribe link to emails
Insert a one-click unsubscribe link to the bottom of every email you receive

Does this send an unsubscribe link in a Daily-ish email to unsubscribe from the Daily-ish?  (then I get a Monthly-ish and I get to do it again? and then I realize that apparently I'm still a Plot-skateer...so again...)
Or is this a global unsubscribe?
