We're in a log home that the original owners of our place built from a kit in 2003. They seem to have at least attempted to use the safest materials they could find, for finishing and maintaining it, but maintenance fell off, when the husband had a stroke, and the wife simply couldn't do everything, alone. I don't know what year was the last one it was done, but it definitely needs doing, this year. When we hire someone else - like a reputable company - to do it, is it common for them to use products we choose? I know I need to ask them, but I don't want to make a request/demand that's stupid.

I'm hoping for eco-friendly, low maintenance options, that hopefully won't cost us an arm and a leg, because we also have several other major repairs to deal with, this year, and none of it - including this, and chinking these same logs - is anything we will be able to 100% do on our own(though we will do as much of it ourselves, as possible).

Weatherseal

https://www.loghelp.com/products/weatherseal-stain-log-home-finish.asp

Its about sixty bucks per gallon but its a great product and one coat is usually enough. In fact it will cure for and penetrate for a very long time before you can even consider recoating. It needs to be applied with a brush because it is very thick but it wont drip everywhere, which is good. Be sure to pressure wash first and let dry for several days for best results...
