My asparagus is doing great! It comes up in the greenhouse in March, mostly, and outdoors in April. This is the season when vegetables are not available locally, so it's great for me.
Asparagus is edible -- and delicious! -- raw, fresh from the garden.
I grew it all from seed, mostly Jersey Knight seed from Johnny's Seeds, and one or two of the plants are Precoce d’Argenteuil from Baker Creek. The Precoce seem to come up a little earlier than the Jersey Knight, but the plants are 1 year younger so maybe younger plants come up earlier. I sowed a few in 2017 in containers that got overcrowded by the time I planted them out in place in 2018. And I sowed more seeds in 2018 and 2019.
As you can see in the photo, the ones in the greenhouse come up insanely fat. In the greenhouse there about 4 plants, and so far this March have been getting one spear every 2 or 3 days. The outside garden has much more space devoted to it so in April we'll have enough to take inside and cook.
That is some SERIOUS asparagus!!!
I would show you mine but I literally just sowed the seeds yesterday and so it might be a few years... Until recently I had some nice asparagus growing in a large container (very rocky soil) that I had started from seed a few years ago.... until I decided to divide it and it all died. Guess I did it at the wrong time?
Will try again, maybe I'll get it right this time.
This photo is from last year. My area is still 6 weeks away from first asparagus harvest. Note in the photo all the white parts were trimmed off. The people I gave this asparagus to do not like the white part so I cut them off and had them for dinner that evening.
This asparagus was harvested from plants grown out from my landrace asparagus seed mix.
WOW Rebecca, that is one astounding asparagus spear! That is a meal all by itself. Good job! What is your secret?? I hope you tell us how it tasted.
I've been so busy this winter I can't believe it's that time again! YAHOO!! Since you brought it up I figured I should go take a look at my own. I only see a few small shoots so far on my green Jersey Knights but it looks like my Purple Passions are starting to rock and roll. Thanks for the reminder. I think now I should take a closer look at my artichokes. Boy I'm glad spring is finally here!

It tasted great! I dunno, it's in the greenhouse and most of the spears in greenhouse are fat, but this was the fattest yet. It has deep mulch, and maybe spacing helped? I dunno why they're so fat.

I'm so sad and jealous! I think my asparagus just decided to give up and die. It spent the first four years of its life being dug up by chickens but last year we didn't have any chickens and I thought it would finally take off. I didn't harvest anything last year and let it grow but this spring there is absolutely nothing showing up.
On the plus side, all my rhubarb withered up and died with some black disease last June but actually weren't dead and are regrowing beautifully right now!
