I wonder what criteria they use? Around here the heath burning is for agricultural reasons - traditional way of rejuvenating heather covered hills. So the fire service is not involved unless there is a problem! We usually have a dry spell in later March/early April and the cut off for burning is April 20th I believe, due to the likely presence then of ground nesting birds.

did go out of control, and some people had to be evacuated on the other side of the hill as it got quite close to the houses there.
