So I needed a fix of dope to help finish the final joint (in my sand point well system) and it got me thinking about being an addict for some reason. Addicted to the chain of corporate chemical confabulation. I'm not sure what to think about PTFE "forever chemicals". They are everywhere and at some point I heard rumors of studies linking them to carcinogenic qualities. Municipalities are shutting down water sources due to contamination from it. Yet it is on the dental floss roll I thought was giving me a healthy mouth. I heard it is all over carbon style paper, so almost any receipt I get. I've never heard warnings about dealing with that stuff. Now I go to the store for pipe tape or joint compound and everything is PTFE (the non-tape compound stuff mentions "PTF" and implies it is the same compound, no way to tell from BS labels like that). Professional plumber websites laud the stuff with no cautionary mention.

Looking at Wikipedia, this is part of the teflon scheme. Supposedly it is inert at normal temperatures. Anecdotal evidence has teflon pots, left to burn without contents, producing fumes that kill songbirds and give people flu-like symptoms (but who would ever care about something that produces flu-like symptoms?). Laboratory tests confirm this quality, but highlight that the temperatures involved are beyond what produces fumes toxic to birds from burning butter, so...

Is it wise to put this stuff on pipes to be used for drinking water? What happens if you don't use it? Are there other substances with less toxic associations to use? Am I confabulating a certain "forever chemical" with different ones that fall under the same generic label? Do I need to stick some dope in my pipe and smoke it so's I don't worry about nothin no more...?

I wouldn't get too Jung up about teflon tape on cold pressure joints.

Of course, you could revert to traditional methods I've seen, including lead foil or lead-infused cotton thread.

Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore. Check the tiny ad.
