I just listened to a great podcast discussing this new crop.
"Kernza" is a tradename for an improved strain of Thinopyrum intermedium by the Land Institute. It is the in process of being bred for improved grain size, and consistency of grain size. There is a small but growing secondary market for the grain, with various millers/bakers/brewers etc... experimenting with it.
It has been in development for about a decade or so at this point.
