The Mavis Institute Co-Op, which is a year-round non-profit farm, permaculture lab/ education center; located in a small hamlet of Flat Top on the grounds of Mavis Manor/ Mavis Farmacy in Mercer County WV. In the heart of Appalachia

Our Mission is to encourage local food production and ecological awareness through hands-on permaculture and homesteading education.

We are the crossroads between Nature and Technology.

We are like the kindergarten to homesteading, back to land, or even gardening. We welcome folks from any skill level, but specialize in helping people start from scratch. Never raised a garden, that’s ok we are here to walk you thru planting the first seed. Always wanted a pet chicken, great let’s talk about it’s needs, tired of the rat race and want to know how to escape, we will tell you the truths of rural/self-reliant living. The more you know the better choices you can make.

We believe quality education is key in creating a 'real' sustainable future. Our permaculture training and the shared resources (which include access to land), will help provide the opportunities to reshape communities.

Our programs give folks access to the skill sets of growing their own food, taking steps towards having self-reliance or perhaps starting their own farm-based businesses. We offer hands-on apprenticeship/ mentorship, workshops, and other outreach programs.

Together, we can be the change we wish to see in the world.

The Mavis Farmacy Lab; is out 1 acre Farmlab, where we are always trying new things, it’s also the location of most of our animals, and what most people see on the farmstreams.

Mavis Manor; is the 1897 Queen Anne Victorian Manor were some indoor classes are taught, The staff lives, and the main inspiration on how and why we started the education.

The rest of the grounds of Mavis Manor, include an additional 32 acres. We have a tree farm, hayfields, pasture land, pond, budding fruit forest, The Just-in-Time Garden Lab and tons of future projects.

In the Summer of 2023 we will be adding interns. We will also be doubling our outreach and in house educations. These will include a specialization in starting fruit forests, Apiary, chickens and ducks, mushrooms and using the digital world to achieve community reliant.

In the distant future, we plan to add a tiny house village to began building a community.
