I have da problem.  My geese are 3 years old and although my goose has laid MANY eggs in the last 2 years, there have been no goslings.  The eggs do not appear to be fertilized when OI candle them, although I have seen the gander breed with her.  I have toulouse geese if that makes any difference.  Do they have to have water to successfuly breed?  Thanks in advance for your help.  Puzzled and confused.  P.S.  Do female geese sometimes act like ganders and try to breed with another female?  Lisa

I have to preface this with the statement that I am not a goose expert nor have I raised geese before. I have researched them quite a bit because I want to get geese in the future and I watch lots of youtube :)

From what I hear/read geese do not NEED water to breed, but it can make it easier and encourage more of it. I doubt geese would act like a gander in the sense you are talking about, but I do not know. Another possibility that happens with some animals is that they get too fat to successfully breed. Any chance your geese have a muffin top? ;)

Maybe the gander has problems and you need a new one?

Hopefully someone else will be able to chime in with more actual experience to counteract my guesses :)

In most critters, humping - including same sex humping - is an expression of dominance, so it's not likely the most accurate way to determine any critter's sex.
