It's pretty hard to reply to this outside of the Cider Press.
My perception is that "Nature" as a benevolent entity is rather a human abstraction. Nature is indifferent to our fates, as individuals and as a species. We're a passing eyeblink in the geological record. Nature ticked along fine before us, and will tick along long after us.
We don't really cooperate, but rather align ourselves to how nature works, how the biosphere works, or sooner or later we will meet the giant Monty Python foot.
The other thing to note is that nature, our biosphere, as it truly is, is viciously life-or-death competitive, and yet sometimes cooperative when there is mutual benefit or simply indifference to the way other forms get their living.
Our species exhibits both; it's hard wired into us. It's notable, though, and without a fair dose of the cooperative aspect we probably would not have survived to have this discussion. So, we can choose cooperation if we perceive it is a greater benefit than the alternative.
