... Bruce beat me to it :), I was going to suggest mushrooms as well. That is what I get for opening a bunch of posts, and then not responding until later :)
I'm not a soil expert, but I do know that the more alive your soil is, the more likely the nasty elements are going to be locked up in some inert way. I would focus on mushrooms, getting a lot of carbon added, organic manures, biochar, and anything to add life.
