Hi, I am looking for an e-bike conversion kit. I have a bike that I haven't used in many years. Now I want to upgrade it to an e-bike. I was looking on the web and there are many different brands. What brands are good that you would recommend? Thanks

I use the BBS02 by bafang.

Absolutely love it. I use it for daily commuting, and it seems to sit in the sweet spot of not having so much power it is dangerous, or draws the attention of police. While at the same time it has sufficient power to eat up the hills, and keep pace the congestion through town, for better safety.

My only regret was not initially buying a bigger battery for increased range.

Dear Michael, thanks for your suggestion. I searched on it and found some similar blogs like best e-bike conversion kit. Banfang BBS02 has 750W motor power. How would be Banfang BBSHD? Can you recommend me one for me?

My previous eBike motor was about 200 watts. It was enough to help up hills. The battery wasn't enough to help with my entire 30 kilometer commute. I used it only for going up hills, and for getting up to speed, if wind was bad, or to sprint through a badly congested area. It had an uncomfortable throttle. The nice thing about it, is that it was super light-weight. I replaced the front hub with the motor, and tied the battery to the handlebars. No other modifications necessary. I can easily ride the bike with a dead battery.

My current eBike came as an integrated unit. It is super-nice. Every part of it is fine tuned to work well with every other part of the bike. It has engine cut-offs attached to the brakes, making it harder to accidentally wreck by unexpected acceleration due to inadvertent pressing of the throttle. It has pedal assist, so that the motor starts when I start peddling. It has 5 speed settings. If I peddle faster than the speed setting, then it automatically uses no battery. I ride it hard, pedaling hard enough that the battery is mostly idle. Headlight and taillight are integrated into the bike. It offers 500 watts, enough for any hill, or  wind storm. It is a heavy bike. Did I mention how heavy it is? Yup. Heavy. It has to be built heavy to carry the heavy battery. It also has built in cargo racks and front basket. It's geared so that I would be able to get it home, albeit painfully slow, if the battery died. I have ridden it 60 kilometers on one charge, which is essentially double my normally expected distance. I rode it 1600 kilometers this summer, and had a grand time. I ride it as a bicycle, providing most of the power, and not as a motor-cycle where I'm only a passenger. The one feature it doesn't have, that I wish for is a "regenerative downhill" charging mode. I would gladly go slow down hills, if I could regain some of the energy lost by going up them.

I have multiple ebike kits, tried them all. My personal favorite is the E-Switchy Electric Bike Kit www.eswitchybikes.com Here's why:

Customer service - is extremely professional, they answer calls and emails right away.

Quality - is Excellent! Decent power to go over mostly any hill, I am 180LB and enjoy going on some trails, more than enough power to get me over the hill. Battery lasts a long time many hours of riding over trails. Pretty fast too! I get about 28mph on pedal assist, throttle power only is a bit less. The kit is pretty light it's about 14LBS with all accessories so I don't feel much difference in weight from my original bike to my newly converted ebike, can still pick the bike up with one hand and loaded on my truck.

Warranty - I had a small issue with the controller they send me a new one right away, within a few days I was back on the road.

After sale services - I am old school and I needed help with the setup. I talked to one of their tech guys and he helped me set up the parameters like bike weight, rider weight etc to get the most accurate performance. Pretty cool

Supportive of a good cause - That's my favorite part, they support a cancer foundations. On their website it states from every sale they donate an amount to a cancer foundation, you don't see that often from businesses.

Conclusion, for me it is worth the investment. I love my bike and couldn't be happier with the E-Switchy product. Happy Customer and would recommend. If anyone interested check them out www.eswitchybikes.com

I want to get a bicycle - what should I get?  If you know nothing about bicycles, that might seem like a reasonable question.  Same goes for electric motor kits.

All kinds of them will work well enough to make a lot of happy customers.  The motors can be on the front wheel , rear wheel , bottom bracket - all make people happy.  People love big motors, and small motors;  need big batteries, or not.  If you can draw a good picture of the exact kind of experience you want, maybe there's a motor setup that's really for you.  For me, it's to be able to get out there with the traffic and move kind of fast when necessary, on the way to get groceries or something - not motor vehicle fast, just ca. 15-20mph, but under all conditions, not just favorable grades.  I've heard from a lot of people who want to be on a bicycle for fitness purposes.  Takes all kinds, I guess, that's not me.  Or they want to tour the countryside.

My motorized bicycle is real heavy.  When I ride that one, I'm highly dependent on motor power.  I think it doesn't have to be that way, depending on what you need.
