I'd love to grow sunflowers for oil. One year I used some seeds from a bag of black oil sunflower seed selling at the feed store. They sprouted fine, but the chickens got to them and killed them. I'd like to try again but I can't afford to buy an oil press.
I saw a thing--does anyone else know more about it? It was an oil press made from a vertical metal pipe with a masonry drill bit that fit perfectly inside it. The nuts were pressed in the pipe, the oil came out the bottom and the pulp came out a hole in the side. It was turned by a little windmill.
I saw this in a video but there was no info on how to build it--it was in a series of ideas for pressing oil.

the concept is pretty simple, so a handy person should be able to make a press, especially if they aren’t worried about it being being super-efficient as far as extraction goes. that’s for either a screw-type press like you’re describing or the hydraulic kind. but unless you’ve got all the parts sitting around and a lot of free time, i don’t think it will end up being cheaper (especially if you value your labor!) or work better than some of the cheaper presses available.

i’m trying to picture a design like you’re talking about, and there must be a screen or perforated plate somewhere at the bottom to keep solids from coming through. generally with a screw press, the oil dribbles out the side just before the end of the process (the pipe is generally horizontal), and the solids (‘cake’) pass through the end, but it sounds like what you’re describing is opposite to that.
