Tree and fruit ID needed

I bought this at the market yesterday. I was told that it was tropical, but would cope with our frosts, and the name she gave me began with 'es' I think, but it might have been just a local Portuguese name.

Anyone recognise it?

Looks like guava. or the related pineapple guava.
