Very interesting!
I like the concept "collectors feeding optic cables" I don't like all the tech involved, in their system, just looks like a lot of potential failure points to me.
I like the idea of coming up with a low tech version of the same thing. My question would be "where do fiber optic cables come from, and can we get them cheap or free somehow?"  Collectors are fairly easy to build.

In the thread that you mentioned, I put a comment that included the idea of not putting roof penetrations, walls are easier to seal watertight. Optic cables can run in through walls (way up high under the eaves for even more protection) and would be unlikely to leak. I'm not a fan of roof penetrations for any reason, and have met few roof penetrative skylight type light wells that did not leak.

Neat thing! Thank you for the ideas!
