I have been using the PictureThis plant identification app on my phone for the last year and a half and find it to be very useful and user friendly. I have seen several other apps mentioned here in the forums and thought I'd post a brief review with some pros and cons for why I prefer this particular app.
Pros:
1. Super simple to install and use right away, no sign up necessary for the free version of the app which is all I use
2. Easy to snap a photo of a plant and immediately scan it for an identification (I prefer this to more of a crowd sourced type of id)
3. Easy to grab an existing photo from your phone albums and scan it
4. Lots of detailed information about the plant, its family, care needs, toxicity, habits, and a "diagnose" feature ("plant needs water/ plant may have ___ disease" etc)
5. Easy to save interesting plants to your "garden" for future reference; also saves photos snapped in-app for at least several months.
6. I have found identification to be pretty accurate (allowing for poor image quality) and at least sending me in the right direction.
Cons:
1. The paid subscription box pops up every time the app is opened and you have to touch a gray "cancel" button.
Bottom line, I find this app to have the easiest user interface of any I have tried. I am not a tech tinkerer and appreciate that the bulk of information is all available on the main plant id page as it loads after scanning. It is an attractive design and not too distracting despite having a lot of info. Some people may find the paid version "push" to be off-putting, but it is worth the extra tap for me.
NYTimes Wirecutter listed it as the "honorable mention" app; I prefer it to their two highest recommendations:
